Characters in Claymation are created using oil-based clay because it is easier to manipulate without the clay cracking or splitting and so it does not dry. An underlying skeletal frame can be made from wire or pipe cleaners. Gaps can be filled in with foil and Styrofoam forms added for structure. A thin layer of clay is then added to complete the character.

Things to consider:
  • How does your character look from all possible angles?
  • Can your character stand on its own?
  • Can you make small changes to its positions and still make it stand, walk,  and move?

What makes a good Claymation character?

  • Characters should be clean, proportional, and detailed.

  • Characters are not too tall and show significant detail.

Characters that are too tall, too short, too small, out of proportion, lacking in detail, or not covered in clay make figures that are not the best Claymation characters.
